How do you choose an impact wrench?
5+1 Tips from our Techno-Experts!

An impact wrench is a valuable tool when it comes to tasks that require extra strength. Designed to deliver high torque output with minimal operator effort, an impact wrench is a good investment for any professional or DIYer.

But how do you choose the right one?

When evaluating an impact wrench, keep in mind that the nature of the job is a critical factor. While a DIY car project has different requirements than a product assembly line, there are typical characteristics that need to be assessed.

5 + 1 Tips to choose the right impact wrench!

TIP 1: Check the torque level

This is a very important feature as it indicates how strong your impact wrench is. A high torque level ensures that your impact wrench can handle any challenge. To better understand the meaning of the torque, something simplifies and imagine that we now want to tighten one with a hand wrench. The shorter a wrench is, the more force it takes to lighten the nut. That's because the shorter the manual wrench, the less lever it has and the less torque it can deliver. For an impact wrench, the torque is the result of a mechanism that produces strong blows. The level of torque you need will depend on the nature of the jobs you want to produce. For heavy duty tasks requiring high torque, we recommend a pneumatic impact wrench as it can provide higher torque levels than an electronic impact wrench.

TIP 2: High rotations per minute

RPM or rotations per minute is an indicator of the rotational speed of your tool. The higher the RPM, the higher the momentum of the moving part of your impact wrench. That momentum is transferred as torque to the fastened part. Then a higher speed gives you some extra torque than the indicated torque. But for more delicate jobs you want to be able to reduce the speed to a very low level.

TIP 3: Watch your Square Drive

Tip number 3 sounds logical, but is the most common mistakes people make when buying an impact wrench. Choosing the right size sqaure drive is an important factor in the life expectancy of your tools. The nature of the jobs you want to perform will determine whether you need a 1/2", 3/4" or 1" or even higher square drive for very specific heavy duty tasks.

TIP 4: Electronically or Pneumatically Driven

An electric impact wrench offers different properties than a pneumatic impact wrench. An electric impact wrench is often used for smaller bolts, the square drive is normally 1/2". It is available in a cable and battery version, although the battery version is most commonly used for continuous work and for heavier jobs.

TIP 5: Socket time

Do you know which square writes will meet your needs? It's time to choose your socket set for your impact wrench. Be careful! Not all outlets are compatible with power tools. The socket set you choose should be designed for impact tools. For starters, make sure you know how to find the right size. And while it is easy, there is a trap. Now not all outlet sizes are in inches. The disk size is different from the socket size and has to do with the compatibility of the sockets with the impact wrench drive. If you're switching from one impact wrench size to another, you can use an adapter to match your old outlets with your new impact wrench.

The depth of the socks varies depending on the purpose of use. Usually, if you don't know the depth you need, it is advised to go for a deeper one. However, shallow sockets are also needed in awkward narrow spaces that you can't use in the deep. Last but not least, you have to choose the point of the socket set. Again, that depends on the nature of the tasks you want to perform. For DIYers, the 12-point sockets are suggested to facilitate alignment. On the other hand, heavy professionals may prefer the sturdy 6-point sockets that can deliver heavy torque.

EXTRA TIP: Stay Safe!

That is a parameter that most buyers forget. Impact wrenches, especially the professional ones, produce immense noises and vibrations that can cause significant damage to your orders, hands, wrist and elbows. Therefore, under the right impact wrench and durable socket set, do not see ear protectors, anti-vibration gloves and safety glasses. If you work in a dusty environment, a face mask is also necessary.
